It sounds obvious, but glasses are designed to sit on your nose rather than the top of your head, which is wider than your temples. Repeatedly wearing glasses on top of the head will damage the frame and bend it out of shape.
Diamantes and other semi precious stones in the temples (arms), will also be affected. The constant flexing of the arm to fit on the top of the head, loosens the stones and they eventually fall out.
Stones that fall out can be replaced easily with a resin, take them to any optician for advice if this happens. Do not use household glue or superglue to replace stones or diamantes as it will corrode the arm and discolour any metals.
Always use your glasses case, but especially if you are at the beach or in your car. When your glass case isn’t available, leave glasses upside down on the frame. Glasses are likely to go out of shape if left in strong direct heat, especially if left on the dashboard of cars.
Look at them closely. Check to make sure that screws are tight and look for scratches. It is common for screws to loosen over time and this can be adjusted in any of our stores for free. Adjustments are free for customers of David Clulow. Scratched lenses are not covered, so follow the steps below to protect your lenses.
Try not to use paper towels, sleeves of garments or rub them on your shirt as this can scratch the lens. Yes, we’ve all done it but you’ll not notice the tiny scratches until it’s too late.
Use the cloth provided or get soft microfiber cloth to clean your glasses. Microfiber is a blend of polyester and polyamide. Fabrics made with microfibers are exceptionally soft and hold their shape well with an exceptional ability to absorb oils. Make sure to keep the cloth clean and away from dust or dirt.
Dish detergent soap will work as well. Start with warm water to dislodge any dirt, then use a few drops of detergent and rub along all sides. Clean the frame, too. Dry with a clean, lint-free cotton towel.
Don’t use towels that have been cleaned with fabric softener to clean your eyeglasses. Fabric softener will leave residue on the lenses. If you’ve already don this then clean them with soap and warm water and dry with a soft cloth, as instructed above.
Don’t allow perspiration to stay on your lenses. It can damage lens coatings or leave residue in the tiny screws and cause them to fail over time. Hair spray can damage lens coatings, too. Use it prior to wearing your glasses and keep glasses out of the way when it is in use.
We thought we’d repeat this message as it is the most common cause for glasses bending out of shape and appearing to be loose.
