Ask the Store Manager

Meet Marie, she’s our fabulous store manager of David Clulow Opticians in Islington & regional trainer, from all the way across the pond.

We feel like the luckiest company in the world to call her one of our own, we sat down for a cup of a tea and a chat about why she loves David Clulow Opticians as much as we love her.

David Clulow Opticians:
So Marie, how did you get into the optical industry?

Marie:
I guess you could say I fell into optics.  I’d fallen in love and decided to forgo my plans of leaving for New York to be a starving actress. But after making this decision, I suddenly realized I had no idea what I was going to do with my life; fast forward to two months later and I’d tagged along with my partner to help her choose glasses. I really hit it off with the woman helping us, mainly because everything my partner tried on looked awful and I didn’t mind telling her so.  I was wandering around the store when I saw a pair of Prada glasses.  I said “Why don’t you try these?” and what do you know, that was the pair she went with.  This marked the beginning of a long road of me telling her I was right.  This was also how I began my journey into the world of eyewear and I’ve never looked back since.

David Clulow Opticians:
New York lost a starving actress but we gained an amazing store manager, how long have you worked for David Clulow Opticians & what’s your favourite thing about working for us?

Marie:
I’ve been working for David Clulow Opticians a year now and it’s honestly been the best career move I’ve made. One of my favourite things about my job is the level of service and care we give our patients. Most retailers are only focused on their bottom line. Our mission is to bring a personal touch to quality eyewear. We get to know our customers so we can recommend frames and lenses that not only look great, but suit their lifestyles.

David Clulow Opticians:
What’s the most common thing you hear when someone chooses a pair of glasses?

Marie:
When someone first comes in the most common sentence we hear is, “What do you think would look good on me?” This is where the fun starts. You always have the classics; like square and rectangular frames. These are classics for a reason, and tend to suit most faces. Let’s be honest, a great pair of frames can totally change your look. It’s like a guy that suddenly gets a great haircut, or when a girl finally finds the perfect shade for her eyebrow pencil. It’s magic. Now that eyewear has become such a fashion accessory you see a lot of people who want to make statements with their choices.

David Clulow Opticians:
So true! What are you key style tips for glasses?

Marie:
We’ve seen a big trend shift toward rounded frames or as I like to call them, the “professor looks”.
Someone with an oval face who is a bit quirky can rock these and look really interesting. Someone who has a heart-shaped face and a vintage aesthetic could try a cat-eye shape, or what I call the “sexy librarian”. A gentleman with a square face and hipster vibe could take the iconic Ray-Ban Clubmaster shape from the 50′s and look dreamier than Idris Elba. Younger people who want to go really out of the box could take something that’s been popular for years and make it new again. You see this with the Ray-Ban aviator style which has traditionally been worn as sunglasses now being worn as clear glasses. This is definitely a trend-setter look, ideal for someone who wants to be ahead of the curve.

David Clulow Opticians:
What happens if I wanted to update my look but don’t need glasses?

Marie:
We also carry all the new collections for sunglasses, so even if you don’t need a prescription, you can always look like you just walked out of brunch with Beyoncé.

David Clulow Opticians:
Amazing, who doesn’t want to look like they brunch with Beyoncé ?! We’ve talked a lot about frames, but can you talk to us about lenses?

Marie:
So now we’ve found the perfect frames, you’ve completed your eye test with one of our knowledgeable optometrist, what’s next?  Lens selection is a huge part of the process and something a lot of other opticians may just skim over or recommend without any reasons as to why.  At David Clulow Opticians, we understand if you want a quality product, you’ve got to pair the frames with the right lenses.  Whether it’s going for a Ray-Ban where you’ll always receive their authentic lenses, or getting your first pair when you have a dog and don’t yet realize they love eating expensive things, we’ve got you covered.  Our optometrists give us a personalized hand over tied to your prescription and wear of the glasses.  After this is done and we’ve listened to your expectations we can recommend the best choice for your day-to-day life.

David Clulow Opticians:
What happens if I change my mind or my dog eats them!

Marie:
Let’s say you get home and decide you should’ve gone more sexy school teacher instead of avant-garde artist. Or your girlfriend says she never realized how unkempt your eyebrows were until you put those 1950′s Ray-Ban Clubmaster glasses on. We’ve got a 30 day exchange policy in place, just in case. This can be tied to frame selection, lens selection, or prescription. Oh, and your hungry dog? Everything you purchase with us comes with a 1-year warranty. This means no matter what happens, you can feel assured your eyewear purchase is secure. We also offer lifetime free cleaning and adjustments at any of our locations, just so we get to see our customer’s faces again!

David Clulow Opticians:
