As new airplanes allowed people to fly higher and farther, many US Air Force pilots were reporting that the glare from the sun was giving them headaches and altitude sickness. A new kind of glasses was introduced with green lenses that could cut out the glare without obscuring vision, and the Ray-Ban brand was born.

The result was the creation of the G-15 and G-31 lenses.

G-15 a neutral green lens that would allowed a “natural vision” (transmit colors as they are) with 15% visible light transmission was developed to meet the Navy Air Corp need for a sunglass lens that would not alter colour even slightly.

The G-31 a neutral gray lens that has 31% light transmission. Both of them are dark enough for strong glare situations and yet are excellent lenses for general streetwear.

Soon the G-15 and G-31 were complemented by the introduction of B-15: brown Ray-Ban - lens providing a greater contrast under low light conditions (hazy weather).

Ray-Ban Kalicrome was a light yellow glass, particularly useful for shooters, and flyers. Blue light, the shortest wavelength light in the spectrum, is easily diffused by moisture or dust in the air on overcast, foggy or hazy days. Kalichrome, by filtering out the scattered blue light, increased contrast and sharpens details on these days.

Ray-Ban Gradient Mirror Lens featured a special coating on the upper part of the lens for enhanced protection. The coating created the mirror look and adds extra glare blocking power for strong glare conditions, to protect against overhead and reflected glare.

Ray-Ban developed a truly neutral sunglass lens, the grey lens N-15 with 15% visible light transmission. After a couple of years, the N-15 was reformulated slightly to make it more suitable for prescription use and re-named G-15. So the G-15 gray-green lens – as we know today is a neutral greenish gray lens giving true color vision and conformable protection even in most dazzling glare.

Ray-Ban Photocromic Ambermatic Lens was introduced. It changed colour depending on light conditions.

The Ray-Ban Ambermatic highlighted outlines and shapes, even on snow, and darkened especially intense light. Ray-Ban Ambermatic lenses are available uncoated or with mirror coatings in Full Mirror, Double Gradient Density and top gradient density. Available for Aviator, Outdoorsman, Shooter and Caravan models.

Ray-Ban Introduced the Ray-Ban Glass Polarizing lenses (GPL) with a polarizing efficiency of 99.9% effectively eliminate polarized light and reflections.

Ray-Ban GP lenses were neutral for true color perception. They also provided the superior scratch-resistance of optical glass. First available on Aviator and Cats models.

Ray-Ban re-launched the B-15 top gradient mirror lenses that help to cut road haze, boost contrast and sharpen details blocking glare at all times to provide superior protection. By absorbing large amounts of visible light and infrared rays, the lenses keep your eyes cool and your vision sharp even when driving in intense sunlight for hours at a time.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Ray-Ban introduces RB 50, lenses that have a unique general purpose/specialty lenses for moderate to extreme glare conditions. Normal absorption ranges from 80% to 90% for general use and extends to 95% under cold, bright conditions for added protection for skiing and other snow sports. The RB-50 lenses offer high contrast enhancement throughout their absorption range.

Ray-Ban ULTRA lenses represent the state-of-the art sunglass technology offering all the features of the RB-50 lens together with exceptionally high (99.97%) polarizing efficiency. Light polarization cuts out reflected light, a particular advantage in water sports such as sailing. It also allow fishermen to see into the water, when surface light reflection would otherwise make this difficult.

Ray-Ban Chromax lenses (G-20, B-20) represent an evolution in the Ray-Ban collection increasing the relative intensity and contrast of critical driving colors (reds, green and ambers). The use of neodymium, a rare earth, element, selectively filters light from the driving environment to improve visual contrast and sharpen details, providing contrast and colour enhancement. As a result, traffic signals, brake lights and signs appear brighter and easier to see while glare is controlled, increasing the ability to filter the light and increasing the contrast between the yellow, green and red.

Ray-Ban P3 (polycarbonate) and P3 PLUS (crystal) Polarized lenses guarantee exceptional quality of vision, more vivid and high-definition colors. An anti-reflective coating is also applied to eliminate glare and provide full protection from harmful UV rays.

The polarizing filter, color enhancement, anti-reflective coating and the water-repellent system are extraordinary features that are combined to deliver excellence to each lens. The color enhancement process enables visuals to be extremely clear and brilliant. The anti-reflective coating reduces the percentage of light reaching the eye, ensuring both comfort as well as a sharper image. Additionally, the innovative water-repellent system found in the P3 Plus lenses allows any water to run-off the surface easier, guaranteeing additional protection for the wearer.

New Gradient Lenses are introduced. Up until the early 2000’s only mirror technology was used by Ray-Ban to obtain gradient colors. From 2009, gradient technology was applied by applying color that is rather than being applied to the surface of the lens only, is integrated inside the lens achieving more robust tint option. In the same year, the Gradient Polar are introduced. Polarized lenses are normally solid colors. Ray-Ban was amongst the firsts to introduce exciting gradient colors that also have a polarisation feature.

Ray-Ban Ambermatic 2012 Limited Edition is a re-introduction of the legendary photochromic lens from the 70’s to reinterpret four classic Ray-Ban Aviator styles. In 1978, the range of lenses expanded even further with the introduction of light-sensitive photochromic lens. Ambermatic is a special yellow lens that darkens depending on light and tem-perature conditions. By transitioning from yellow to brown, the lens techno-logy blocks glare and highlight outlines and shapes, even in the snow.

The re-lunch of three brightly coloured multilayer mirror lenses - Flash mirrored lenses - introduced on the Aviator and Cats collection. The hybrid surface of the multi-layer mirror treatment on the lenses provide super high shine inspired by the look of the 80’s. These lenses were created on lighter G-15 green-gray lens base given the multiple mirror layers provide increased UV protection and lower light transmittance.
